Harvest Yards began by organizing a handful of volunteers to pick the fruits and vegetables in people’s yards. The produce harvested is then given to groups that distribute donated food. This project has been helpful to local communities but we wanted to produce something that would benefit more people in a wider area. To gain an understanding of the food donation-distribution cycle we decided to volunteer for food distribution groups. We determined that there are gaps in the donated food distribution networks and finding a solution to facilitate food donations and tracking the food use and waste would be beneficial. In addition, we discovered that there is no universally accepted method in place to determine if the donated food was reaching people who live in food deserts and other areas where people were suffering the most from food insecurity. So, we started designing an app to address these issues.
With the App you can track donated food from the
Supplier → Distributor → Consumer
Non-distributed food is tracked to a composter.
Anyone looking for food can use the App to find donated food distributors that will happily give free food. The App will provide the date, time, and location of the distributors. Plus, supply you with a map to guide you to their location. Distributors can track their efficiency and impact in the community and generate tax documents for the suppliers. There is something to help everyone involved with the process of donated food distribution.
Today, the Harvest Yards app is a reality. It not only helps track the food, it helps people who are suffering from food insecurity to find the food. It has been developed for both Android and IOS users and is currently in the final stages of beta testing. We anticipate that the app will be available on the Google Play Store and Apple App Store by the end of November 2024. We are currently completing the app-to-internet integration for suppliers and composting modules, which will soon be available to update via download.
The more people that use the app, the better it will be. The app currently lists food distributors in Los Angeles, California, parts of Orange County California, and Memphis, Tennessee. If the app is not generating results to find food in your area, it just means that we have not had a chance to input enough information from your area. Contact us and let us know where you are located and we will do our best to enter donation sites in your area as soon as possible. If you are a distribution center or a donation supplier, please contact and we can help connect you with organizations that will help supply and distribute donated food. Together we can ensure that there is, “Food for All”.
